El sábado 4 de abril Microsoft cumple 40 años de vida en el mercado. Fue ese mismo día, pero de 1975, cuando Bill Gates y su amigo Paul Allen crearon la empresa que llegaría a revolucionar el mundo de la tecnología.
La idea de fundar la empresa Microsoft les llego de la revista Popular Electronics, en la que en la edición de enero del 75 presentaban la “microcomputadora” Altair 8800. «Leímos entusiasmados sobre la primera computadora personal, y aunque no teníamos una idea clara de para qué se podría usar, enseguida nos quedó claro que nos transformaría a nosotros y al mundo de la informática», escribió Gates 20 años después en su primer libro, Camino al futuro.
«La revolución comenzó y transformó la vida de millones de personas. En ese momento no nos podíamos imaginar hacia dónde nos iba a llevar» escribió Gates. Y vaya que el mundo no es el mismo desde entonces.
Allen se retiró de la empresa en 1983 y entró Steve Ballmer. El éxito de Microsoft se consolidó cuando se aliaron son IBM para que todas sus computadoras tuvieran su sistema operativo, que comenzó siendo el MS-DOS.
En los 90, con la llegada de Windows 95, se introdujeron las novedades gráficas nunca antes vistas en la informática: un escritorio ordenado, barra de tareas y el menú Inicio. De allí para adelante el resto es historia, Windows con sus distintas versiones hasta llegar al XP y al 7 llegaron a tener presencia en el 90% de las computadoras del mundo.

Tomorrow is a special day: Microsoft’s 40th anniversary.
Early on, Paul Allen and I set the goal of a computer on every desk and in every home. It was a bold idea and a lot of people thought we were out of our minds to imagine it was possible. It is amazing to think about how far computing has come since then, and we can all be proud of the role Microsoft played in that revolution.
Today though, I am thinking much more about Microsoft’s future than its past. I believe computing will evolve faster in the next 10 years than it ever has before. We already live in a multi-platform world, and computing will become even more pervasive. We are nearing the point where computers and robots will be able to see, move, and interact naturally, unlocking many new applications and empowering people even more.
Under Satya’s leadership, Microsoft is better positioned than ever to lead these advances. We have the resources and drive to solve tough problems. We are engaged in every facet of modern computing and have the deepest commitment to research in the industry. In my role as technical advisor to Satya, I get to join product reviews and am impressed by the vision and talent I see. The result is evident in products like Cortana, Skype Translator, and HoloLens — and those are just a few of the many innovations that are on the way.
In the coming years, Microsoft has the opportunity to reach even more people and organizations around the world. Technology is still out of reach for many people, because it is complex or expensive, or they simply do not have access. So I hope you will think about what you can do to make the power of technology accessible to everyone, to connect people to each other, and make personal computing available everywhere even as the very notion of what a PC delivers makes its way into all devices.
We have accomplished a lot together during our first 40 years and empowered countless businesses and people to realize their full potential. But what matters most now is what we do next. Thank you for helping make Microsoft a fantastic company now and for decades to come.

La empresa sólo ha tenido tres CEO desde su fundación: Gates, que le dejó el puesto a Ballmer en el 2000 y ahora, Satya Nadella que comenzó en 2014.
Es este último quien prácticamente ha revivido la empresa gracias a su visión. Luego de una caída en las ventas de la PC y de que Microsoft se mantuviera alejado del mercado de los smartphones, tabletas y la Nube, Nadella ha logrado volver a posicionar a Microsoft.
Con la próxima llegada de Windows 10 y la despedida del icónico Internet Explorer para dar paso al navegador Spartan, además de todos los servicios que Microsoft integra en la Nube, esperamos que el gigante informático siga presente por más años. ¡Feliz cumpleaños Microsoft!
